What is PT-141?

PT-141, also known as bremelanotide, is a synthetic peptide that is being investigated as a potential treatment for sexual dysfunction in both men and women. It is a melanocortin receptor agonist, meaning that it binds to and activates melanocortin receptors in the brain. Melanocortin receptors are involved in a variety of physiological functions, including appetite, energy metabolism, and sexual behavior.

PT-141 is thought to work by stimulating the release of dopamine and nitric oxide in the brain. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that plays a role in motivation, reward, and sexual pleasure. Nitric oxide is a vasodilator, meaning that it widens blood vessels. This can increase blood flow to the genitals, which can lead to improved sexual function.

PT-141 is currently being investigated in clinical trials for the treatment of the following conditions:

  • Female hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD)
  • Erectile dysfunction (ED) in men
  • Premature ejaculation (PE) in men
  • Sexual dysfunction associated with spinal cord injury (SCI)

The results of these clinical trials so far have been promising. For example, one clinical trial of PT-141 in women with HSDD found that PT-141 was effective in increasing the number of sexually satisfying events per month. Another clinical trial of PT-141 in men with ED found that PT-141 was effective in improving erectile function and satisfaction with sexual intercourse.

PT-141 is generally well-tolerated, but it can cause some side effects, such as:

  • Flushing
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Nasal congestion
  • Back pain
  • Injection site reactions

More serious side effects, such as hypotension (low blood pressure) and syncope (fainting), are rare.

PT-141 is not yet approved by the FDA for the treatment of any condition. However, it is available through compounding pharmacies. If you are interested in trying PT-141, be sure to talk to your doctor first.

Here are some additional things to know about PT-141:

  • PT-141 is a self-injectable medication. It is typically injected subcutaneously (under the skin) in the abdomen or thigh.
  • PT-141 should be injected 45-60 minutes before sexual activity.
  • The effects of PT-141 last for about 2-4 hours.
  • PT-141 can be used by men and women of all ages.
  • PT-141 is not recommended for people with certain medical conditions, such as heart disease, kidney disease, or liver disease.

If you are considering using PT-141, be sure to talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits.
