PT-141, also known as bremelanotide, is a synthetic peptide that is being investigated as a potential treatment for sexual dysfunction in both men and women. It is a melanocortin receptor agonist, meaning that it binds to and activates melanocortin receptors in the brain. Melanocortin receptors are involved in a variety of physiological functions, including appetite, energy metabolism, and sexual behavior.
PT-141 is thought to work by stimulating the release of dopamine and nitric oxide in the brain. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that plays a role in motivation, reward, and sexual pleasure. Nitric oxide is a vasodilator, meaning that it widens blood vessels. This can increase blood flow to the genitals, which can lead to improved sexual function.
PT-141 is currently being investigated in clinical trials for the treatment of the following conditions:
- Female hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD)
- Erectile dysfunction (ED) in men
- Premature ejaculation (PE) in men
- Sexual dysfunction associated with spinal cord injury (SCI)
The results of these clinical trials so far have been promising. For example, one clinical trial of PT-141 in women with HSDD found that PT-141 was effective in increasing the number of sexually satisfying events per month. Another clinical trial of PT-141 in men with ED found that PT-141 was effective in improving erectile function and satisfaction with sexual intercourse.
PT-141 is generally well-tolerated, but it can cause some side effects, such as:
- Flushing
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Nasal congestion
- Back pain
- Injection site reactions
More serious side effects, such as hypotension (low blood pressure) and syncope (fainting), are rare.
